An Article about the 50th Anniversary of the Supramental Descent:

The Golden Jubilee of the Golden Day

by Sadhu Charan Patnaik

This year (2006) on 28 February, we celebrated the Golden Jubilee of the Golden Day. That day, visitors were allowed to visit the Mother's and Sri Aurobindo's rooms. The announcement of The Mother on that great day in 1956, was reprinted and distributed to all the visitors:

The Supramental Manifestation upon Earth

29 February 1956

"This evening the Divine Presence, concrete and material, was there present amongst you. I had a form of living gold, bigger than the universe, and I was facing a huge and massive golden door which separated the world from the Divine.

"As I looked at the door, I knew and willed, in a single movement of consciousness, that "the time has come", and lifting with both hands a mighty golden hammer I struck one blow, one single blow on the door and the door was shattered to pieces.

"Lord, Thou hast willed, and I execute,

A new light breaks upon the earth,

A new world is born,

The things that were promised are fulfilled.

"The manifestation of the Supramental upon earth is no more a promise but a living fact, a reality.

"It is at work here, and one day will come when the most blind, the most unconscious, even the most unwilling shall be obliged to recognise it."

On 10 July 1957 the Mother said "It seems strange that something so new, so special and I might say so unexpected should happen during a film-show.( A Bengali film, Rani Rasmani)....and while I was seeing that .... I saw the reality it was trying to represent, what was behind, and this put me in touch with all that world of religion and worship, of aspiration, man's whole relationship with the gods, which was the flower of the human spiritual effort towards what is higher than he. And suddenly I had concretely, materially, the impression that it was another world, a world that had ceased to be real, living, an outdated world which had lost its reality, its truth, which had been transcended, surpassed by something which had taken birth and was only beginning to express itself, but whose life was so intense, so true, so sublime, that all this became false, unreal, worthless....the old spirituality was an escape from life into the divine Reality, leaving the world just where it was, as it was; whereas our new vision, on the contrary, is a divinisation of life, a transformation of the material world into a divine world. This has been said, repeated, more or less understood, indeed it is the basic idea of what we want to do. But this could be a continuation with an improvement, a widening of the old world as it was--and so long as this is a conception up there in the field of thought, in fact it is hardly more than that--but what has happened, the really new thing, is that a new world is born, born, born. It is not the old one transforming itself, it is a new world, which is born. And we are right in the midst of this period of transition where the two are entangled--where the outer still persists all-powerful and entirely dominating the ordinary consciousness, but where the new one is quietly slipping in, still very modest, unnoticed--unnoticed to the extent that outwardly it does not disturb anything very much, for the time being, and that in the consciousness of most people it is even altogether imperceptible. And yet it is working, growing -until it is strong enough to assert itself visibly.

"In any case, to simplify things, it could be said that characteristically the old world, the creation of what Sri Aurobindo calls the Overmind, was an age of the gods, and consequently the age of religions....And at the very summit of all that, as an effort towards a higher realisation there has arisen the idea of the unity of religions, of this "one single thing" which is behind all these manifestations; and this idea has truly been, so to speak, the extreme limit of human aspiration....To grasp it, a reversal is needed. It is necessary to leave the Overmind creation. It was necessary that the new creation, the supramental creation should take place.

"In the supramental creation there will no longer be any religions. The whole life will be the expression, the flowering into forms of the divine Unity manifesting in the world. And there will no longer be what men call gods.

" When the physical substance is supramentalised, to incarnate on earth will no longer be a cause of inferiority, quite the contrary. It will give a plenitude which cannot be obtained otherwise.

"But all this is in future; it is a future... which has begun, but which will take some time to be realised integrally. Meanwhile we are in a very special situation, extremely special, without precedent. We are now witnessing the birth of a new world; it is very young, very weak--not in its essence but in its outer manifestation--not yet recognised, not even felt, denied by the majority. But it is here. It is here, making an effort to grow, absolute sure of the result. But the road to it is a completely new road which has never before been traced out - nobody has gone there, nobody has done that! It is a beginning, a universal beginning. So, it is an absolutely unexpected and unpredictable adventure."

(CWM9 pp148-150)

On 24 February 1957 the Mother announced "Up to now, all that has manifested of this divinity is the world as we know it; but the manifestation is boundless, and after this mental world as we know it, of which the apex and prototype is man, another reality will manifest, which Sri Aurobindo calls the Supermind, for it is in fact the next step after the mind; so, seen from the world as it is, it will naturally be " supramental", that is, something above the mind. And he also says that it will truly be the changing of one world into another, for so far the whole creation belonged to what he calls the " lower hemisphere" as we know it, which is governed by Ignorance and based upon the Inconscient, whereas the other one will be a complete reversal, the sudden appearance of something which will belong to quite a different world, and which instead of being based on Ignorance will be based upon Truth. That is why it will truly be a new world."

(CWM9 pp 156-157)

We may summarise the event that took place on 29 February 1956 which was something unique and remarkable There was a golden door separating the upper hemisphere of Sat, Chit and Ananda from the lower hemisphere of mind, life and matter. The Supreme Mother, embodied as our Mother, for the sole purpose of bringing down the Supramental into the earth-consciousness ('Her embodiment is a chance for the earth- consciousness to receive the Supramental into it'- Sri Aurobindo) shattered the barrier and the Supramental Truth, Light and Consciousness flowed upon the earth in an incessant flow. That is the New World that is born. From the sevenfold creation of the universe, Bhu, Bhuba, Swar, Vigyana, Ananda, Tapa and Sat Lokas, the first three viz. Bhu, Bhuba and Swar have already materialised on earth as Matter, Life and Mind in the lower hemisphere. The possibility of the manifestation of upper hemisphere of Sat,Chit (Tapas) and Ananda, has now been established upon this earth, because the inter-connecting Vigyanamaya Loka or Supermind was brought down upon the earth by Sri Aurobindo and the Mother.

The Mother clarified, "But this material world as it actually, visibly is, is so powerful, so absolutely real for the ordinary consciousness, that it has engulfed, as it were, this supramental force and consciousness when it manifested, and a long preparation is necessary before its presence can be even glimpsed, felt, perceived in some way or other. And this is the work it is doing now. How long it will take is difficult to foresee. It will depend a great deal on the goodwill and receptivity of a certain number of people, for the individual always advances faster than the collectivity, and by its very nature, humanity is destined to manifest the Supermind before the rest of creation. At the basis of this collaboration there is necessarily the will to change, no longer to be what one is, for things to be no longer what they are...What is indispensable in every case is the ardent will for progress, the willing and joyful renunciation of all that hampers the advance to throw far away from oneself all that prevents one from going forward, and to set out into the unknown with the ardent faith that this is the truth of tomorrow, inevitable, which must necessarily come, which nothing, nobody, no bad will, even that of Nature, can prevent from becoming a reality--perhaps of a not too distant future--a reality which is being worked out now and which those who know how to change, how not to be weighed down by old habits, will surely have the good fortune not only to see but to realise."( CWM9 pp 157-158)

Well, all these appear like fairy tale to the majority of the human beings. But if a person can free his self-sufficient ignorant mind from his old pre-conceived ideas he can see the 'force' working. One such instance can be quoted in Bangla Desh war. One Major General who actively participated in the front, records"...in 1971 a series of miracles took place that helped the Indian Army achieve a unique military distinction--to retrieve its loss of face after the debacle against the Chinese in 1962. For the first time in its long history, a regular, well organised and a much better equipped army laid down arms before the Indian Army, in an unconditional surrender on 16 December 1971 in Dacca. There were nearly 95000 fully armed Pakistani soldiers under their Commander in chief, Lt. Gen. Niazi who formally surrendered to Lt. Gen. Aurora of the Indian Army....What prevented the Chinese from exploiting the situation and activating the northern borders to help ease pressure on the Pakistani army fighting against the Indian Army? It was not as if the Chinese had started making overtures to India for friendship. At that time, their attitude towards India was still quite belligerent.... The American Seventh Fleet with its nuclear powered ship USS Enterprise had steamed into the Bay of Bengal. There must have been some purpose in the show of force in support of their ally Pakistan, but why did they remain inactive and silent spectators after the initial, highly provocative act of sailing into the Bay of Bengal?... I believe it was an external latent 'force' which came into action for India's help." It will not be out of place to mention that when the Seventh Fleet entered the Bay of Bengal, one Ashramite nervously asked the Mother"The Seventh Fleet has entered the Bay of Bengal. What will happen now?" The Mother calmly replied" It will return back."

While brooding over the debacle of the Chinese War in 1962, the military experts in the world are yet to fathom the reason why the Chinese Army withdrew from Indian frontiers when she was making clear advances especially in Dhola sector? Practically there was no resistance from Indian side due to the blunders committed by the Indian political leaders. (The Chinese had taken 3319 men of Indian army as prisoners with 52 officers). Our political leaders shouted slogans 'Hindi-Chini bhai-bhai' and left the northern frontier totally unguarded. The then defence minister had suggested earlier that all the ammunition factories in India might well be converted to lantern-making factories. He was so much obsessed with and was misguided by words like non-violence, and panchashil, that he provided our army nothing more than out-dated 303 rifles of British time for the defence of our country. On this controversy one efficient and upright Army General was made to retire and a sycophant was made the G.O.C. The Chinese Army came armed with five-miles-range automatic machine guns and in hundredfold more numbers. Those who were in the front recounted the horror of that war and the plight of Indian Army. But there again it was the 'force' that impelled the Chinese Army to withdraw. They lost all enthusiasm to advance due to the action of the 'force'. (The Mother confirmed this fact later on.)

A time has come for the humanity, to release oneself from the influence of lower nature, remain fully surrendered at the feet of the Divine Mother, realise that this life is given only for the Divine work, build up unshakable faith that the Mother is the Supramental Mahashakti and keep the Divine Presence constantly in oneself. Then one can be free from all types of ailments by the 'force'. He can even be free from the attack of terminal diseases like cancer or coronary thrombosis by the influence of the 'force.' When a person finds that he is having a tumour, he can command his belligerent cells like this" Why are you all collected here like a bundle in one place? No agitation, be normal, return to your usual position." Or in case of violent palpitation of the heart, one can command the cells of the heart" Calm, calm, peace, do not be agitated." One can prolong his life span if he can be free from the adverse suggestions of the physical mind, which always foresees calamities and catastrophes, and the inherent fear in the cells of the body about the unknown, which spoils the usual balance in the body and upsets the possibilities of harmony in the physical level.

The Mother has brought for us the supreme possibilities. It is for us to put them into practice in our own life, by our irrevocable faith, our true sincerity (the Mother said that true sincerity is, keeping every moment our mind, life and body under the psychic influence) and our unalloyed devotion to the Mother and by always remaining surrendered at her lotus feet with the absolute trust of a new born baby.

Integral Yoga Studies Notes:

Patnaik's Focus on the 1962 Chinese War and the 1971 Bangladesh War is a fitting segue to looking at the importance NUMBERS play in the Supramental Descent, especially the Number 9.

The years 1962 & 1971 are not only 9 years apart, they also each reduce to 9 using the process of Theosophical Addition.
